Summary
10+ years of experience as a computer systems professional with a demonstrated knowledge of hardware and software to resolve the unpredictable issues that arise between concurrently running, independent computers, computer systems, and networks; broad education and background in many fields.
Computer Experience
Software: Unix Shells and Utilities (awk, sed, etc.), C, FORTRAN, PASCAL, Vax-MACRO, BASIC LISP, DCL, TCP/IP Operating Systems: Unix, Linux, VMS, various PC systems - DOS Windows, etc. Hardware: Sun Microsystems. Digital Equipment Corporation Silicon Graphics, Data General Eclipse, Hewlett Packard, PC's
Work Experience
Instructor
Teach Unix for users, system administrators (Contract)
SMITHSONIAN ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY (SAO), Cambridge, MA
Solar B Project of the High Energy Astrophysics Division, SAO
Computer Specialist
Managing RLX blade cluster running Red Hat Linux; system administration, networking, extensive software installation and maintenance
Also working on web search engines, other web site issues, scripting, monarch software (for converting email archives into HTML format), and other computer matters for the Solar B Project.
Computer Specialist, Soho Project, SAO (Contract)
System administration of Sun Work-stations at Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt MD, for the Soho (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) Project.
-Installed and upgraded OS software as various models of Sun Workstation, designed disk partitioning, NIS maps, directory structures, etc., installed patches, software patches, e.g., ssh, Ghostscript, etc. Provided assistance and consultation to users and other staff members on equipment, purchasing, networking, security, backups, maintenance, etc.
-Crafted a plan to reorganize directory structure while installing new operating systems as a result of hacker's infiltration. Resulted in fewer system dependencies and restored LAN to service in three days.
Computer Specialist (Programmer)
High Resolution Camera Group of the High Energy Astrophysics Division, SAO
-Mastered, maintained, repaired and upgraded Epoch Data Archival System, an extensive peripheral subsystem used for archival storage on WORM of massive data sets, and upgraded OS for compatibility; installed and applied backup software and tape drive with provision for including all data and later automated such backups
-Wrote heavily used script for archiving files on Epoch system with protection of data already on the system and insurance of integrity of files to be written, multiple options for different categories of data, checks for available space, compression, wildcard matching, remote operation to Epoch server node, logging, etc.
-Prepared and installed autonomous network for use at Marshall Space Flight Center
-Reconfigured computers to operate in various levels of independence from outside support to protect sensitive operations from interference and to be used self-sufficiently off-site without servers.
Computer Specialist
High Energy Astrophysics Division, SAO
Computer support for division of about 300 people.
-Devised creative idea to write a set of linear files to use in a program that retained the appropriate astronomical output data and could be implemented in adecisively shorter period of time than with originally sought data structure.
-Discovered a hacker's intrusion and found a problematic command that prevented a software package from running by contriving and implementing a practice of scanning the process table
-Taught classroom tutorials in computer use and provided extensive user assistance
Computer Specialist
Solar X-ray Group of the High Energy Astrophysics Division, SAO
Performed all manner of work with hardware, software, networking, etc. Extensive, thoroughgoing experience with Unix and VMS, networking and communications.
-Installed, maintained and upgraded: Sun workstations through multi-processor SPARC series running various versions of Sun Unix up through Solaris 2.7; Vax Stations running Unix and VMS; PDP-11 running old Bell System Unix; various models of PC; all sorts of peripherals - disks, tape drives, printers, network devices, specialized in devices, etc; Operating systems, licensed product, and other software.
BRIGHAM & WOMEN'S HOSPITAL, Boston, MA
Channing Laboratory
Senior Assistant to the Computer Systems Manager
OS Installations, software package installations, scripting, software and hardware management and troubleshooting, backups using scripts and Legato, almost entirely on Sun Unix systems.
-Initiated the creation of procedures for system documentation and a system directly resulting in the ability for users to make changes expeditiously.
-Researched and analyzed C code to resolve important system malfunction; identified new user access restrictions as cause.
-Wrote a suite of scripts and designed formats for associated data files and prepared an operating procedure to make and verify copies of system backup tapes to preserve integrity of data.
